When Galileo pointed his telescope to the heavens, he saw a world beyond what was deemed
possible. But knowledge, in his time, was caged by disbelief and dogma. Even today, the
shadow of privilege, power, and paywalls still hovers around the beauty of science and
discovery. If all people were created equal, should they not have the same opportunity to
tell their stories?
A single candle can light a thousand more without losing its flame. Knowledge works the same
way. At Betta, we believe science should be like a candle passed from hand to hand, lighting
up minds, hearts, and communities, ensuring that no one stumbles in the dark. While some are
still grappling with the thick ‘human-made’ darkness, the vast majority are unaware of their
light. Of their voice. And most sadly, of their indifference. Maybe that is why they are
often called the ‘silent majority.’
Betta Open Publishers is a global community of researchers, educators, and practitioners
dedicated to advancing knowledge and fostering collaboration across disciplines. Our mission
is to provide a platform for open access publishing that empowers authors and engages
readers in meaningful dialogue.
We are committed to breaking down barriers to knowledge sharing, ensuring that research is
accessible to all, regardless of their background or location. By embracing the principles
of open science, we aim to democratize knowledge and promote equity in research
dissemination.
Our promise at Betta is to ensure excellence in open academic publishing, to elevate
underrepresented and silent voices in science, and to contribute to real-world societal
development. Through public engagement, interactive digital formats, and other innovations,
we aim to ignite scientific curiosity where it is often extinguished too soon. We are
confident that if people see themselves reflected in the stories and discoveries we publish,
they will learn the ‘art of science’ and understand the ‘science of the art.’ Most
importantly, they will recognise that science is not the domain of a privileged few but a
realm they have every right to enter and shape.
Why is this important? Because I believe the future of science lies in the minds of
dreamers—young people experimenting in rural parts of India, students challenging textbooks
in the United States, thinkers gliding down snowy paths in Greenland, resilient youths in
Nigeria’s bustling cities, resourceful Indigenous people in Australia, curious travelers
aboard high-speed trains in Germany, innovators in Brazil’s growing cities, and optimists
everywhere—all daring to question the limits of what is possible.
Betta is not just an academic venture. It is a sanctuary for bold ideas, a springboard for
boundless possibilities, and a powerful movement whose time has come. It is the ink of
justice writing its own history, the wind carrying the seeds of knowledge across the world,
and the beacon for all who believe that science belongs to everyone.
We will measure our success in the early career researchers we provide an opportunity for,
our rigorous peer review process, and the bold ideas that we share in a timely fashion. Our
passion goes beyond contributing to the growth of the global academic landscape—we are
dedicated to collaborating and fostering a community that nurtures transformative solutions,
driving meaningful societal change.
As expressed in Our Credo, we believe in democratising science and opportunities for
everyone, and our commitment is to offer journals that truly embody this principle. Our
first journal, Betta Health Equity, will be an excellent and rigorous peer-reviewed journal
that accepts articles that promote health equity.
As we embark on this journey to make science ‘delightfully irresistible,’ we extend an
invitation—not just to researchers but to all who believe in the power of knowledge to transform
lives. We are Betta because we believe that even the best can do better. Our vision is to build
a world where no discovery is locked away, where no bright mind is dimmed by lack of
opportunity, and where science truly serves humanity.
Like Galileo, Betta, holds up the telescope, inviting you to look through it and see the
universe not as a four-walled city but as a boundless frontier. Will you join us now?
